Tactical Interent Response Network note:
_______________________________________

The Tactical Internet Response Network has never been part of the Animal Liberation Front or it's "ALF's online division".

The so-called "ALF's online division" has always been the " A.L.F. - Internet Division".

The RCMP's claim that the TIRN reponse issued a communique threatening to "hacking into Web servers, planting computer viruses" is completely false.

The TIRN is an electronic civil disobedience working group.

Animal group's Web protest worries RCMP

OTTAWA - An Animal Liberation Front campaign of digital demonstrations against opponents has sparked RCMP fears of an escalation in cyber-sabotage by extremist groups.

A newly obtained intelligence brief prepared by the Mounties reveals concern about the efforts of activists to disable the Internet Web sites of alleged animal abusers.

The ALF's online division, the Tactical Internet Response Network, organized "electronic civil disobedience" actions against two fur dealers and a vivisection laboratory earlier this year.

In a communique, the Response Network threatened to "damage animal abusers on the Internet in any way possible," including hacking into Web servers, planting computer viruses and bombing Web sites with e-mail messages, the RCMP says.

According to the Mounties, the radical animal rights organization claimed to have already cracked numerous computer systems and copied files.

"It could be only a matter of time before groups such as this one access databases with the intention of corrupting the data, leaving the victim doubtful about the integrity of his information holdings," predicts the RCMP.

A copy of the secret intelligence brief was released under the Access to Information Act, although several passages of the document were deleted because of continuing investigations.

The RCMP says Canadian criminal extremists use computer networks to gather information, communicate and spread propaganda. But there are also indications some groups see the Internet as an offensive tool.

The ALF's Response Network claimed that more than 800 people from 15 countries, including Canada, took part in a "virtual sit-in" last Jan. 15, effectively shutting down the Web site of a Swedish vivisection laboratory by deluging it with messages.

"The Tactical Internet Response Network is pleased to have shown once again that `David' can have some effect against the `Goliath,'" said the group's report on the effort.
