The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Electronic Privacy
Information Center (EPIC) have launched a new project called "Echelon
Watch" http://www.echelonwatch.org/

I think, we are atleast in some part responsible for that since Jam
Echelon Day (JED) really did alot to publicize Echelon. The ACLU and EPIC
with all their many links to articles and security agencies, never manage
to mention hacktivists or JED.

Their "Take Action" is limited to sending a letter your represenative.

JED, no matter how technically ineffective, atleast exposed alot more
people to Echelon and got much more media attention. Perhaps, if enough
people write their respective governments they will get rid of it.

I think it'd be far better for JED II to come out. "This time, its
encrypted" and use it to promote encryption of mail in a big way. I don't
know if we have the time to tie it to the demonstrations against the
World Trade Organization (WTO)... but that is a possible hook. It might
also be a bit to early to do another JED.

I think now that the ACLU is atleast willing to acknowledge Echelon and
work on a project with EPIC, we can atleast regard JED as partially
successful.

Solid,
	Flint
