I disagree. As has been pointed out by many people, the real value of
the ECHELON spamming was publicity. Pretty much everyone realizes that
we really can't jam the stupid thing. The point is that we are engaging
in an act of civil disobedience. It was a protest, the final result of
which was to heighten public knowledge of what was going on.
The press was all over this sucker. I recall reading in like 20 online
publications about the event, and the articles were all followed by
discussion of ECHELON and encryption laws in this country. Offline, in
the popular press, I saw some segments on the national news and in major
newspapers.
The washington post did three stories about the protest, then like 4
stories about ECHELON and the NSA, and then there was a major opinion
pubished in the posts Sunday Outlook section (the op/ed section of the
sunday paper) attacking the NSA and a lot of other security
establishments.
