...so, once we know the solution requires social change, rather
than better police work, we can do something constructive.
Nobody can say what sort of social change is required, but nobody
has to -- all that is necessary is awareness that change is
required, and the ability to change.... and then society will evolve
into a form better suited to the environment it finds itself in.
[environment = five interdependent factors: natural (climate etc),
economic, social, technological, political]
core point = let society evolve
key concept = society is a self-regulating organism just like every
other entity in this universe and it evolved for 4.5 billion years just
fine _without_ better police work ...
But, we cannot just walk up and disband all law and law
enforcement. Some people, for example, don't agree. Therefore,
as a society, we should _discuss_ these issues.
Therefore, to "do our bit" as best we can, we should facilitate
discussion. It is this that will free our collective greivances and let
us work together.
My personal take on facilitating discussion means collecting info of
all sorts, and disseminating it through multiple distribution
channels, such as email, websites, CD-ROM. And learning as
much as possible about hardware and software and internet, and
helping as much as possible other people using them (when they
ask).
That's why I am on this list, why I work in IT, and why I am writing
this email..
Law enforcement treats the symptoms. Communication addresses
the cause.
<clears throat> ahem OK just FIVE seconds of poison to some
people on this list: economists have studied markets for some time
and it has been noticed that more competition is better for a given
market than less competition. Competition increases the quality of
goods available, while reducing the price, and optimising the
efficiency of the market. This model is the source of deregulation
in many telecoms, utility and other state-dominated markets.
....but the point IS, that if markets perform better without regulation,
why wouldn't people?

PS: when you actually try this stuff, eg, facilitating communication,
you find some people are actually closed to the idea of sharing
themselves. These are usually the ones who need to share. It
might seem rude but really, they might hurt someone if they
harbour their feelings. They have a responsibility... this
unwillingness to communicate is the problem we are facing. How
to cure all the hurt in the world? Group therapy on the internet of
course. But getting those people online and letting them sort
themselves out is more than one lifetime can take... unless I have
help.. which is what anyone who has made it to here is doing,
cheers dudes. Bit by bit... if everyone swept in front of their door,
the whole world would be clean.
