Geez.  Carolyn Meinel.  Well, you'll learn the basics, but a lot of the
higher-end techniques she elaborates on are plain wrong.
Most of the #dc-stuff list hates her for some reason.

It's not a stupid question. Anyone who hacks was once a beginner and had to
start somewhere. Curiousity is your best ally. The "Mostly Harmless" guides
that are mirrored all over the web are as good a place as any to start. I
