Depends... What type of machine and OS are you running on, what mailer
are you using, and did each of the messages have header information? Did
you perchance crash in the middle of a mail update, i.e., was the mailer
checking mail and downloading....?

I can think of a couple of ways that this happened, if indeed it is not
a forwarded message or a reply...
