October 21 has been set as "Jam Echelon Day".

In case you haven't heard, Echelon is a computerized system established by the U.S. National
Security Agency, which, in the words of a report prepared for the Free Congress Foundation by
Patrick Poole, "captures and analyzes virtually every phone call, fax, email and telex message
sent anywhere in the world."

On October 21, the Hacktivism mailing list is inviting one and all to help jam Echelon, the world-
wide electronic snooping system operated by spy agencies in the United States, the
United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand --- a consortium called "UKUSA."

In deciding to become involved in the "Jam Echelon Day", I had doubts about the the
advisability of jamming a government computer program, even in the name of privacy. Then I
recalled the oath I took when I joined the U.S. Army in 1942 which was to "...defend the
Constitution of the United States against all enemies whomsoever, both foreign and
domestic...", an oath I still honor. The 4th Amendment to the Constitution says :
"The right of the People to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against
unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but
upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularity describing the
place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

Email, faxes, and phone calls ("papers, and effects") certainly are privacy rights which should be
