Not picking on you by any means, Heather, but this is a
relatively good example of the type of "reply to WHAT?
post" Bronc was implying in his message.
Unless changed to be the first of a new thread, the subject
line alone only gives the thread, not the actual post, and
many times I've simply just gone on to the next post if I
can't easily sort out where in the thread a post belongs.
Not having Something included in the reply is kind of like
walking into the middle of an intense group conversation
where everyone is speaking at once - confusing at best.
Considering any one of us may post at any given time to any
given post, the idea of including pertinent substance could
be considered akin to passing around the peace pipe. The
reason the peace pipe and the idea of "having the floor"
were/are such enhancements to societal organization are they
added a structured, easy-to-follow flow to group
discussions.
Granted, receiving emails containing Everything previously
posted in the thread is a bit much, but at least then the
sentiment or statements being responded to are clear. For
communication clarity, if we all could just, at least,
include a sentence or two from the post to which we're
responding, or a brief synopsis of the post, or at very
least the name of the poster to whom we're replying, it
would make following the "flow" of the conversation much
easier... and old folks like me would have less trouble
keeping up. =)
