Hi Heather,
This is a bit of an aside, but I think it's always helpful to remember that
the "military", while they may be watching the moves people make, won't be
doing it through a server with a ".mil" domain name. The visitors you see in
your web logs are probably everyday people like you and me, sitting at their
boring desk job in their office surfing the net killing time, and it just so
happens they work for some contractor or branch of the military (the bullet
sharpening factory or something) that happens to have a .mil domain attached
to the network. (I would wager that most computer espionage is done either
through major ISP domains or other non-specific "normal" looking ones.)
"Unknown" domains found in weblogs are usually the result of a dns lookup
that simply timed out (ie, the server tried to resolve a number into a name
but a packet got lost or something) and so it reports it as "uknown".
If you're interested in trying to track your visitors more carefully, there
are a couple things you can do! The first might be to put some kind of link
like "Government officials [don't] click here" and chances are people will
click on it out of curiosity, though it's debatable how accurate the results
would be.. maybe over a while you'd notice some kind of pattern... Or, try
this: Install the free software by Human Click (www.humanclick.com) who,
with the aid of a javascript plug-in and windows software, allow you to
monitor in *realtime* visitors as they go through your site. You even have
the ability to force a chat window to pop up on their screen and talk with
them! Very cool stuff..
As for monitoring emails, there's no way I know of to do so with a 100%
guarantee. I have used and setup email servers for companies and I can tell
you out of experience that it's very easy to read peoples email if the admin
wanted to and nobody would have any clue.
Anyhow, hope this helps,
Steve
