Thank you Cyborg. You raise good points. It is a given that if you engage
in civil disobedience that you are likely to be arrested. The point here,
though, is that the reaction against the protesters this time is in many
ways unprecedented. Even if you were to measure the reaction in pure
monetary terms, bails for misdemeanors have never been set as high as they
have for people arrested in Philadelphia.
Pay close attention to the content on the phillyimc.org Web site,
particularly to statements coming out of the National Lawyers Guild and the
R2K Legal team. These lawyers are alleging that the kind of treatment that
prisoners received in jail amounted to "torture." This is largely because
the those in jail were resisting and practicing jail solidarity with one
another - not giving their names, not eating, and in some cases not even
drinking water.
Finally, we shouldn't be debating whether or not we should be appalled by
the police reaction, but rather what hacktivist should be doing to act in
solidarity with people who put their bodies on the line.
