oftentimes when days are dark, the beauty of
nature, and also the transformations of humans
can bring what words may never be able to.
for me, it is seeing, and thinking about, the
electromagetic gemstones in the .jpg photo
uploaded at the following url. just scanned:

there are 3 objects (and a scarf as background)
top: silicon
made from sand, this piece was from silicon valley,
the tech museum or the Intel museum there, forget
which. in any case, it is made from some process in
which sand is transformed into silicon tubes, if it is
the correct image, like a big circular tube of this stuff
which is then sliced for the semiconductor machines
to start etching circuit boards onto. the intel museum
in san jose has the whole process, and used to have
pentium processors (that were duds) as necklaces.
so this silion, sand, that place where archaeologists
find oldest footprints of humanity, is now another
area where we imprint our minds, and futures, in
the silicon valleys, alleys, islands, etc. it can be
found at most geological/science museums. this
'stone' that is artificial, human made, i think, is
or could be considered fundamental as a symbol for
all things electronic, especially the digital. quartz
is another (for vibrations/frequency), but if it is
about computing, silicon is likely involved somehow.
left: amber
this is a special piece of amber given to me as a gift,
and software would be needed to give some chanel-
optimization of the orangeness of it. it is transparent
and translucent. no bugs in this one, but that is one
variety/style of amber, to get a million year old
ant or fly in there. it is very pretty to see in light.
this stone is where 'electricity' was 'discovered'
by Thales of Miletus, in Turkey/Greece, in the
present-day. apparently others knew of the EM
properties of amber, but Thales seemed to have
made a special something out of amber, a gift for
his daughter i think, for her to weave with. and,
found out that this chunk of amber attracted some
things like straw through electrostatic forces by
way of charge, if not mistaken. the amber has to
be rubbed, to get charge, and then effects arise.
amber is named after the sun, which became the
default name of electricity, electron. as Thales
was the first (in the West) to write about such.
right: lodestone
i forget if this is the same as magnetic iron ore,
but it is magnetic. likely ore. a type of ore. and
it is said long before Thales, which was around
2500 B.C.E., that the Chinese had a ruler who
used a magnetic compass thousands of years
before anyone in the Western countries realized
its unique properties of magnetism. magnetics,
and the Eastern Religions versus their non-use
in the Western Medical system, is one way to
see how the cultural developments can differ,
yet both are coming in the same directions now.
one is example in medicine is acupuncture, and
another is brainscanning machines using mag-
netic resonance imaging (MRI). among others.
in any case, with amber and lodestone, there
is an ability to tell the beginning of our human
awareness of EM. have been sharing this with
my little niece. and she is about 4 and is able
to understand how TVs work, how computers
are using information as energy, e-lights, all
through the concept of amber having a charge
(similar to lightning, etc). and with silicon in
the story, then another whole dimension of the
20th-21st centuries emerges, via its stories.
knowing how this little 'magic rock' makes a
little person smile and wonder and imagine all
of the wonders of the world makes me want to
share these photos, in hopes they bring a smile.
funny thing is, all three stones are invaluable in
terms of knowledge, and valueless monetarily.
