interesting article by Wired on light pollution and
stargazing, with reference to the meteor storm
last week in N. America. there are a few maps of
city lights around the globe and N. America that
have been online for awhile. the 2nd page has some
links to similar resources. it was once mentioned
by an astronaut i believe that (or maybe it was
well before space travel and by a writer?) that
the earth from the upper atmosphere looks like
a giant set of nerves, with all its lights burning
brightly (may have been Henry Adams even). it
has also been said that sky observatories are on
top of mountains to get farthest away from light
pollution and atmospheric effects of the big cities.
